Four years ago, when I first started with Prep Girls Hoops, I introduced different areas of the state and their top prospects. I wanted to again work through that this Fall and offer you a much more detailed look at the Hoosiers State’s different regions and the prospects who should shine this Winter throughout those regions. This article will focus on the ladies just Southeast, South, and Southwest of Indianapolis, specifically from Johnson County, Morgan County, and Shelby County. There are 16 total schools spread throughout those three counties, with seven schools in Class 4A, two in Class 3A, one in Class 2A, and six in Class A.
The combination of those 16 schools have provided a great deal of talent throughout the years, with a number of girls moving on to college basketball of all levels. Recently, players like Ashlyn Traylor (Franklin Community 2022), Abigail Young (Mooresville 2022), Isabella Reed (Greenwood Christian), Pa’Shence Walker (Martinsville 2021), Mary Wilson (Center Grove 2021), Maya Chandler (Triton Central 2020), and Emma Utterback (Center Grove 2019) have represented their areas well, with all of them continuing their basketball careers beyond high school. Traylor also represented the area as a 2022 Indiana All-Star.
Still, though, there are a number of girls who go underrecruited throughout their careers, and this is an area where small colleges can find some real gems, plus there is typically a Division-I prospect or two in each graduating class from these three counties. With that said, I wanted to take the time to highlight a handful of girls who may not often grab the spotlight, but who deserve their share of recognition for their basketball abilities. All of these girls are strictly from Johnson County, Morgan County, and/or Shelby County.
Let’s start with numbers…Kylee has already eclipsed 1000 points (1134), she has nearly 400 rebounds, 165 assists, and 202 steals in her career, and she led Shelbyville to their first double-digit win season last year (11-12) since the 2015-2016 season. This year she will try to help them to their first winning season since that same year. She is an athletic guard who can score the ball at all three levels, and she’s a scholarship basketball prospect, but you might not be familiar with her because she’s also a talented softball prospect committed to Mississippi State University.
When I was able to see Ella throughout July, she looked like she always has…tough-nosed and feisty, knocking down shots with range, plus she was handling the ball as much as ever and creating opportunities for herself or teammates. She is a quick/fast and shifty point guard who has long been known for her ability to make shots outside. The fact that she’s also a playmaker makes her doubly difficult to defend. Small colleges looking for an offensive-minded playmaker will love her game, but she can also get after it defensively.
Erica is a prospect who just produces each time out. You have to look past the “measureables” and focus on what she brings each time she takes the floor. While she is a little undersized for how she plays, she does play much bigger than she is. She is a tough-nosed, physical defender and rebounder on the interior, but she can also step out and defend the ball some. Offensively, she has skill and post-moves around the block, she can be a problem in the mid-post, plus she can knock down open, rhythm 3-pointers and keep defenses at bay. Additionally, you aren’t going to out-work her.
Ava is a really nice guard who saw some Varsity minutes a year ago on a very good Mooresville team that made it all the way to the South Semi-State in Class 4A. She has an athletically strong frame, she moves well in most directions, and she plays with a nice toughness and competitive energy. She can handle the ball a little and initiate the offense, she’s good in transition, and she’s best as a downhill attacker who likes to get to the rim. As she continues to make her jumper more consistent, she’ll be even more of a threat. She could see her role increase big time this year.
