Continue ReadingHigh school basketball in Arkansas only names one girl and boy player of the year. But what if they named a player of the year for the class of 2023 and 2024. My 2023 candidates can be read about HERE. What about the gifted class of 2024? There are some really talented players in the junior class that could actually lead their team to a state championship and have outstanding individual performances as well. Let’s take a look at 6 candidates for the 2024 class player of the year.
Dessie McCarty Dessie McCarty 6'2" | C Mt. Vernon | 2024 State AR | Post | 6’2 | Mt. Vernon-Enola | 2024
Dessie is ranked #1 by Prep Girls Hoops in the class of 2024 so it’s a no-brained that she is on the list. She can dominate a game in several ways that makes her a tough player to defend. She came out the gate this year swinging with a 37pt and 20 rebound game vs Rural Special. Dessie has a unique skill set that you don’t see in a lot of post players in the state. She’s getting interest from several colleges and will be a fine addition to any college program. If she continues to dominate and lead her team to a successful season she could be a candidate for the player of the year.
Jordan Marshall Jordan Marshall 5'11" | SF Central | 2024 State AR | Wing | 6’0 | LR Cental | 2024
Jordan Marshall Jordan Marshall 5'11" | SF Central | 2024 State AR has been on my radar ever since she stepped on the LR Central campus. She has the ability to play 4 positions. With her versatility on offense and size and quickness on defense she is another candidate for player of the year. LR Central is shaping up to having a good season. They have depth, speed, athleticism and coming off the biggest upset in school history when they knocked off Conway last year in the state playoffs. If Jordan has the individual year that I believe she’s capable of and she help lead Central to a deep playoff run then she has to be considered as a candidate for player of the year.
Kiaya Davis Kiaya Davis 5'8" | CG Central | 2024 State AR | Guard | 5’9 | LR Central | 2024
Kiaya is a walking bucket. However you want it she can give it to you. She could be the missing piece to LR Central chance at winning a state championship this year. Kiaya got injured last year, but is back and 100% healthy. Her scoring versatility, passing, defensive ability, and basketball IQ puts her in the mix as a player that could be a candidate for player of the year. I’m looking for Central to have a big year and be one of the teams competing for a state title. If they are the last team standing Kiaya could be a player that could be named player of the year.
Delaney Roller Delaney Roller 5'9" | SF Har-Ber | 2024 State AR | Guard | 5’10 | Springdale Har-Ber | 2024
Delaney led Har-Ber to a 20+ win season last year and is looking to do more this year. The 5’10 guard will be looking to lead her team to state championship. With her skills and ability she is poised to have another great year. The experience she gained last year will help her out tremendously this season.
Anna Trusty Anna Trusty 6'0" | CG Greenwood | 2024 State AR | Guard | 5’10 | Greenwood | 2024
Anna is an important piece to Greenwood’s team. Standing at 5’10 Anna can play multiple positions. Her ability to be effective in transition or in the half-court will be huge for Greenwood to make another run at a state title. If she can have a dominating season like she’s capable of and her team makes another deep playoff run, she has to be considered for the class of 2024 player of the year.
AbbiGrace Cunningham AbbiGrace Cunningham 6'1" | C Atkins | 2024 State AR | Post | 6’1 | Atkins
AbbiGrace is a very skilled post player that also possess guard skills. She can initiate the fast break after securing the defensive rebound, operate out of the high post, play with her back to the basket, and attack off the dribble. She has some of the best all-around skills in the state and if she puts those skills on display every time she touches the floor she could be a candidate for the class of 2024 player of the year.
