The West Texas A&M signee left her mark on Oklahoma High School basketball, and left with an exclamation point on Saturday. Her 45 points in the Finals tied the record for most points scored in a State Tournament game. Henley had 26 points and 15 rebounds in an OT win in the first round, and then added 16 and 12 in a lower scoring affair in the Semi-Finals. Truly one of the most memorable single player performances in a State Tournament. Henley gets position too well, and just doesn’t miss when she gets in there. 21/23 shooting in the State Finals is as good as it gets.

Henley had an absolute monster statline in the first game of the Tournament of Champions. 24 points, 20 rebounds, and 7 blocked shots against Booker T. Washington (the eventual tournament winner). Henley has not made her college decision, but holds multiple Division 1 offers, including Abilene Christian and the University of Minnesota.

The double double machine was a Warrior for the Hammon, posted 32 and 11 on the day. Takes a beating around the rim, and keeps on ticking. Setting up deep, good fundamentals and touch to score quickly even when crowded. Swatted her fair of shots with her long wingspan and good timing. Did more than just battled downlow, had a first half stretch where she hit in the mid-range. Then even stepped out for a three. Has developed into a well rounded center.

Opening up the season on Tuesday against Vici, Hammon begins their road back to the Big House. Henley had a busy summer with the OK Swarm , and recently picked up a huge offer from Minnesota. Henley held offers already from Abilene Christian, Stephen F. Austin, Butler, and Missouri State. Wherever the talented 6’4” post ends up will be lucky to get her. Great shooting stroke, I was impressed this summer with how she is able to get angles to block any layup.

A popular recruit from western Oklahoma, West has offers from all levels and all over the country. She’s a physically imposing presence, who is nearly automatic around the basket. While also having the wingspan and done the hardwork to maximize her mobility to be a big time rim protector. Impressively, she also has great touch at the charity stripe and from long distance. West won a Gold Ball as a sophomore and a narrow defeat in the semifinals prevented a repeat as a junior. While there have been moving pieces in Class B, expect West to have Hammon back at the Big House. Eager to regain the top spot.

Henley is impressive to watch offensively. A scorer in the low post, attack from the high post or step out and knock down the 3 point shot. Watching the footwork in the low post is a joy to watch. You can tell hours were spent working on the up/drop step moves. It was also nice to step a big square up and the high post taking what the defense gave them. In Henley case it a rip n go to the basket or a smooth high post jumper. The 3 point shot accuracy she has makes her a game changer when come on how to defend her.
On defense her length and understanding of help makes her a shot blocking machine. Not all shot blocking is done at the rim. She has the quickness and reach to contest a shot outside the paint. I would describe her as an impact player that can change or take over a game. Hanley has received interest and offers from several programs. I will be following to see where she will continue her career.

Game changing size, and plays to it on both ends of the court. Alters and blocks plenty of shots without even leaving feet, is able to do that thanks to long arms and good timing. On offense, she left her mark with deep post ups and promisingly was charted as 5-6 from the throw line in the second half. West also kept her cool and composure against physical play, that even led to being cheap shotted that was called a flagrant. The western Oklahoma standout added offers from Central Arkansas and West Texas A&M.

West is back as a junior to defend Hammon’s State Championship with improved offensive footwork and even better shooting touch from midrange. She already racked up the blocks and absolutely shuts down the paint, but with even more explosiveness added to her game this season, the Hammon defense will be lethal.

As I’ve mentioned before, I was out of the game for a little over a year while I finished up some college stuff of my own. Some players I had seen before and knew they’d be pretty big “stars” when I came back. Some players I saw this weekend and wondered how I missed them the first time around. Henley is one of those. A player that is 6’4″ is going to play somewhere, we all know that. But West may very well be a D-I prospect when all is said and done, when you add in the fact that she can shoot it from deep, showed great hands down low for receiving dump ins, and finished despite the beating that “bigs” take inside. As she learns to dish it down low (on defense) as much as she takes it, she’s going to be a one-of-a-kind prospect.
