Without question one of the top defenders at the Expo. Janiyah defends with aggressiveness and attitude. She forces offenses to play on their heels. It’s hard not to enjoy watching someone who is in attack mode on the defensive end. When caught in switches on bigs she bodied them up on the blocks and forced them to work for anything they got. Offensively I didn’t see her attempt many jumpers but when she wants to get to the rim she gets to the rim and her strong frame is an asset for her to finish through contact just as she did for United East this summer.
Jess showed a variety of strong guard skills. She pushed the ball and advanced it quickly in transition. She showed a good mid-range game and scored inside when the opportunity arose all while showing excellent patience in the half court. Defensively she showed active hands, took good angles guarding on the perimeter and played good team defense. Another NJ Panthers player who showed a well rounded game, Jess will continue to impact the lineup for Middlesex HS this winter.
Highlights
Gabriella Murphy
Gabriella Murphy
I first noticed Gabriella because early in the Expo her shots were not falling but she was still scoring because she repeatedly followed her shots and got inside finishes off offensive rebounds. As the day went on she got more and more comfortable and late in the day she was one of the more consistent shooters at the Expo. She did not force anything and was part of facilitating and efficient, ball sharing offense for her squad. Marlboro Central HS and NJ Panthers have a valuable piece in this young lady.
Anaya Noor Karriem
Anaya Noor Karriem
Anaya is a big strong post presence who finishes well inside. She has a nice touch which extends to the FT line and on her jumpers. I’d like to see her finish with both hands inside a little more and simplify what she does as sometimes she gets caught up trying to do too much. When she sticks to what she does best she makes a big impact at both ends. She rebounds high and initiates transition. On the defensive end she blocks a ton of shots and makes guards think twice before getting in the lane. She will be a force inside for West Orange HS this year.
Ava did a little bit of everything at the Expo and she did all those things well. She stuck out to me in transition today because when she got on the wing she finished and when she had the ball she showed great court vision advancing the ball quickly and getting it to teammates in spots where they could score. Her shot was consistent and she played good team defense while having a knack for getting lots of steals.
