Expert Analysis
Cedric Cobb | Prep Girls Hoops Scout
There’s something to be said about players who finish their careers the right way—and Mehlberg did exactly that. State championship, big moments, and steady production. She’s a shooter, first and foremost. You give her space, she’s making you pay. But what stood out this season was her composure. She didn’t try to do too much—just played within herself and delivered when it mattered most.

Mehlberg delivered one of the biggest moments of the night and showed the kind of veteran poise you expect from a senior leader. She finished with 12 points and played a steady all-around game, but it was her late-game awareness that stood out. Her half-court shot to end the third quarter provided a major momentum swing for Mesquite. Her high-IQ was evident in the closing seconds—refusing to pick up the ball and letting the clock run out secured the Wildcats’ one-point championship win.

Mehlberg is one of the purest shooters in not just 4A but in the state overall. When she gets her feet set, it’s usually three points. She moves well without the ball and understands spacing, which makes her difficult to track defensively. But she’s more than just a shooter — she competes and makes smart decisions late in games. If she heats up during this postseason run, Mesquite becomes a very tough out.

Mehlberg has great length and a solid platform to make an impact on the game. She displayed good scoring ability especially from long range. I anticipate Mehlberg’s role expanding into the season as she will be relied on for her leadership.

Averi played at a high level for her club team during the spring/summer. Her off-the-dribble game has become a nice complement to her perimeter shooting. She is still among the best three-point shooters in the state, if not the very best. Recruiting should start to heat up.

The strong wing came up big for her team especially in the 2nd half. When she’s on her game like she was tonight there are not many that can shoot it as well as she does. She used her size to shoot over the top of smaller defenders. On defense she played solid defense collecting 2 steals along the way.

Mehlberg shot the ball well from all over the court not just the three-point line. Her form is so refreshing to watch that you’re almost surprised when she misses a shot.

Mehlberg is known for her shooting but her other skills stood out to me during the event. She is an improved ball handler and showed the ability to put the ball on the floor as well. Her passing was excellent as she often found open teammates for open looks. She as always showed off her textbook shooting form from the outside.
