Josie is a complete point guard prospect and one of Michigan’s best. She led Hudsonville to a 49-34 upset win against a ranked Grand Haven team, scoring 25 points. Josie added 17 points during a 48-36 win against Byron Center.

Josie Desmit (MBA GUAA 2025) blew me away with her court vision, handles, efficiency from 3, and defense at the MBA Mother’s Day Classic. Josie has an explosive step that she used to split through defenders and draw help to kick out for open shots or score. She finished a floater in the paint and used a jump pass over a defender to a teammate on her drive. Josie makes accurate passes using either hand from any delivery angle; she has elite court vision. When she does pull the trigger, Josie is an efficient outside shooter from a balanced platform, drilling 3’s from multiple spots. She demonstrated elite level skills required to play PG at the next level and knocked down clutch free throws late to help secure the victory for her team.

DeSmit has always had talent and upside, but she has a brand new comfort level on the court. I liked her ability to take charge and set and run the offense for Hudsonville. DeSmit showed a very effective patience on the offensive end that led to good looks at the rim for her and her teammates. She buried a tough to defend pull up mid range jumper from the lane and impressed with an athletic flip in for a bucket. DeSmit also demonstrated the ability to hit her teammates in stride with a pass in the open floor.

I really admire DeSmit’s playing style. Her average of 7.4 assists per game highlights her exceptional passing skills. Moreover, she is also averaging 16 points per game, which shows that she is a competent point guard who knows when to score and when to involve her teammates.

DeSmit is looking like one of the most improved players on the west side of the state early in the season. Her comfort with her game has taken off by leaps and bounds. DeSmit is an expert at controlling the pace and keeping mental mistakes to a minimum. She looks so dynamic offensively early in the season.

I’ve been talking all fall about how much I like the play of DeSmit, and she didn’t disappoint in her first game of the season. She helped lead her team to a 60-52 win over East Grand Rapids with a 31-point, six-rebound performance. She had some clutch free throws at the end of the game. She is in store for a big junior season!

I like what DeSmit brings to the table for her Hudsonville team. She can push the pace on the offensive end with outstanding ball-handling and passing skills. She plays hard-nosed defense. I watched her also knock down a couple of shots behind the arc. I’m expecting a big junior season for DeSmit.

DeSmit was one of the more impressive stock-risers in the rankings update. She’s always been a very talented point guard with a ton of upside. All word is that she’s hit a button and that upside has become bona fide game. DeSmit is a point guard to the definition, as she’s a high level ball handler, an excellent passer that sees the movement on the floor and she can control the feel of the game.

DeSmit was one of only two sophomores on the All-Conference team a season ago. Hudsonville placed second in the conference last season. With the graduation of Petrolje, Baker, and Reifschneider, DeSmit will need to take on an ever bigger role this season. And after watching her this fall, I think she will have no problem doing that!
