Expert Analysis

After a slower start, Spencer found a rhythm in the second half of a competitive contest on Saturday afternoon. Her hesitation like “shake and bake” moves make her a slippery driver in the halfcourt, and a blast to watch in transition. Especially as she’ll shimmy by one opponent then hand out a perfect assist to a teammate. Spencer is a natural playmaker in transition, often making the right read and playing with a freedom that leads to offensive success. Even making simple but important longer transition passes. At times in the half-court, she can stay on the ball too long. But when she’s decisive, her combo of strength and skill can carve up the defense. Including a massive old fashion three point play in the fourth quarter of a close game.

Skilled scoring guard with one of the better bags of moves in Oklahoma. Variety of in and out dribbles, crossovers, snatch backs and more to create space for off the dribble jumpers. Which she is a good shooter in the mid-range and from three. Tough finishing at the rim as well. Scoring is clearly in her DNA and will give her the opportunity to play college basketball.

One of the better scorers at the event. Looked smoother and more in control with her handles, ball fakes, gathers and overall finishing touch. Can hit “shake and bakes” to blow by defenders in the halfcourt, and then finish strongly at the rim. Does a really good job of blending the flash of skills with being gritty by crashing the glass. And getting her hands up on defense, even with the timing to block shots. Great decision making in transition. Oklahoma’s sophomore class is loaded and Spencer is further proof of that.

Spencer’s development will be fascinating to watch as she blazes her own path outside of the traditional OSSAA schools. And because she’s a trail blazer, it means extra reps which likely creates the ability to level up quicker. This year due to the youthful construction of her squad, Spencer spent a lot time on the ball. Which will pay dividends down the road. While capable of bringing it up, still can’t help but feel she’ll be at her best an off the ball scorer. Because it seems that scoring is her DNA. Starting to develop a deep bag of moves, with hesitation, stepbacks and more to create space for jumper or power by defenders. Should continue to take off this spring and summer.

Spencer is part of the more common non OSSAA path prospects are taking. She’s the leader of a freshman heavy (and junior high schoolers playing up, including her sister Jayla) Owasso Prep squad. Had an in person viewing of her earlier this month, that included her going head to head with another promising Oklahoma freshman. Which Spencers’ team taking the scrimmage.
The freshman is strong off the dribble, with a well drilled game that takes advantage of her strength. Will need to continue to work on disguising some of the “push offs” by becoming more subtle moves in some that she uses to create space. But do believe the potential for that is there. Especially with the pace and control she already plays with. Promising all around scorer, just as likely to pull up over a defender or get downhill and finish efficiently.

Intriguing freshman scorer, got to it in a recent scrimmage. Great form and repeatable three point making. Looked advance in how she initiated and controlled contact on drives to the rim. Seems to always be in attack mode, with a scorer’s mindset and movements. Youngster to track, especially with upcoming grassroots season.
