Mekai was one of the most impactful two-way players in the gym at the HBCU Showcase. She zooms around the court and causes a disruption on defense with her scrappy ball pressure. Mekai intercepts passes, pokes the ball out to create steals, then takes them the other way in top gear to score fast-break layups. She’s an effective facilitator, has shifty handles, goes up strong to finish in traffic, and works hard to contribute as a rebounder. Mekai is a point guard who stuffs the stat sheet and will be a welcome addition to the American International Academy program.

Mekai jumped into the passing lane for a steal and reached in with her quick hands to swipe the ball away. Her instincts and quickness are very disruptive on the defensive end. She pushed the ball in transition up the court with pace using both hands after securing rebounds and was active on the offensive glass throughout the day. Mekai scored a putback and finished effectively with her inside hand for multiple layups off speedy drives to the basket. She has a second gear in the open court and delivered a strong performance at the HBCU Showcase.

Mekai tormented opposing ball-handlers with her all-out pressure on defense, producing many steals at the Michigan Cagers Invitational. Her twitchy handles, athletic finishing ability, and playmaking were exciting to watch. She’s a guard prospect headed to Westfield Prep that we’d enjoy seeing at the Freshman Showcase.
