Riley was a focal point of the Fremont defense throughout the game, but especially early on, managing just a single basket in the first quarter. However, as her scoring picked up later in the contest, she found other ways to contribute and help her team to their second consecutive State Championship in Class 1A. Riley finished today with 10 points, she pulled down 3 rebounds, and she handed out 8 big assists, continuing her trend of helping to affect more than 25 points per game for the Lady Braves.

As we’ve mentioned over the last couple of weeks, Riley has really stepped up her offensive output this season in the wake of a teammate’s injury. Riley is every bit of 6-feet tall, she is extremely long, fluidly athletic, and smooth. She can handle it, she has good vision, and she has now proven she can score it. In leading Borden to back-to-back State Finals appearances this season, she has averaged 16.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game, affecting nearly 27 points per game between her buckets and dimes. Additionally, she is a nice defender with her length, size, and athleticism.

missing most of it injured, she needed to become a more dominant scorer and not just a facilitator. She took on that challenge and now the Lady Braves are even more dangerous offensively because of it. Riley has always been a nice, long, fluid, and athletic wing who can play a variety of roles. She also stands out defensively, because she can defend guards on the ball or affect passing lanes with her length. I’m not really sure who on Fremont’s team is going to be able to contain her and Wheeler together.

It’s not often that one of your primary ball-handlers steps in to jump at the opening tip. Riley is a highly skilled player with great height and length on her side. She is able to handle the ball against pressure, find open teammates, and see/throw over pressure. She looks stronger this season, she is absorbing contact much better, and she is more deliberate when attacking the basket. She has some touch outside, and she can get to the rim, but if she had a nice 15-foot pull-up, she could be so difficult to defend. She’s also a versatile defender herself.

Riley has always been a skillful guard with tremendous length, fluidity, and upside. Now that she has gotten stronger, she is starting to complete plays more consistently, absorb contact better all over the floor, and she has looked more active recently in terms of rebounding. If at her length she can prove to sit down and defend smaller, quicker guards consistently, and if she shoots it well this Winter, I think she’s going to start to see her recruiting interest make a jump, because she is a matchup problem as a 6-0 guard.
