The key to earning a victory over Cross Schools is keeping the Stingrays’ star senior in check. Many a team has tried – most have been unsuccessful. Mayers paced her team’s offensive attack with a 26-point performance against the tough out that is John Paul II. If Mayers has the ball in close proximity to the rim, it is virtually an automatic two points even against the best of interior defenses. There are also many occasions where those attempts will result in Mayers heading to the free throw line. Mayers is a multi-sport athlete who recently reached the 1,000-point plateau for her career.

History was also in the cards for Mayers on Jan. 15. Defending SCISA 2A champion Cross Schools matched up against the Hurricanes of Coastal HomeSchool. The Stingrays achieved the 40-21 victory and Mayers reached the 1,000-point plateau for her career. Mayers, in her senior season at Cross Schools, has averaged 22.1 points, 8.7 rebounds and 4.6 steals in 19 contests. She already has two state championships on her career resume and is in search of a third as her high school career nears its conclusion. The Stingrays will be a favorite to once again win it all in SCISA 2A as they have only lost twice against in-state opponents (John Paul II, Dorchester Academy) this season.

Mayers has established herself as a major player with Cross Schools. The Stingrays were last season’s 1A state champions and followed up with a 2A state win by virtue of a 45-29 win against Laurens Academy. Mayers led all scorers with 15 points to bring a fitting close to her junior campaign. While the bulk of what Mayers does occurs in near proximity to the basket, she drained a 3-pointer late in the contest that showcased her versatility. Rebounding and defense are two other strong points to her well-developed skillset. Out of the 15 points she did score, nine occurred in the second half when the combination of an efficient Cross Schools attack and the turning clock put the contest more and more out of reach for the Crusaders.
