It was impressive to see Shea lead an undermanned squad and remain competitive through the season. Although Derby didn’t finish with a winning record, Gray proved a lot through the tough schedule. Her arrival this year on the scene as a potent shot maker will keep her name in conversations.

Shea has been on a heater lately; she’s been one of the top performers in the entire region. Some of her showings include a 27 pt, 9 reb game as well as a 30 pt, 11 reb game. There’s no question why Gray is being mentioned a great deal. This is one of the finer playmakers and she’s producing at a high-level.

Shea has already been mentioned in several articles this season, but her most recent performance deserves special recognition. In a recent game, she scored 50 points—setting a new single-game record for Derby High School, boys or girls—while also grabbing 21 rebounds. She looked unstoppable, scoring in every possible way by finishing at the rim, pulling up in the mid-range, and knocking down multiple threes, including a four-point play from the corner. No defensive scheme could slow her down, as she consistently broke free from double teams to get buckets.

Gray has established herself as a dominant interior presence, averaging 13.7 rebounds per game through 11 matchups. She uses her size and strength effectively to carve out space before shots go up. Gray shows strong fundamentals boxing out and maintaining inside position against multiple opponents. She rebounds confidently in traffic and protects the ball well after securing it. On the defensive, she clears the paint and limits extra possessions for opposing teams. Offensively, she stays active around the rim and creates second-chance opportunities through persistence. That Friday performance also marked her seventh straight game scoring 25 points or more. The week before, she broke her own single-game school scoring record (previously 35 points set in January 2025) by pouring in 38 points, further cementing her status as one of the program’s all-time greats.

Shea Gray has emerged as a junior guard to watch for her speed, athleticism, and versatility. She can score in transition or in half-court sets, and her defensive pressure creates scoring opportunities for her team. Gray has a developing outside shot, making her increasingly difficult to defend.
