Ellie Buzzelle, Rogers, 5-9, 8th grade, guard
Buzzelle has slowly but surely inveigled her way into coach Greg Anumdson’s rotation and, after scoring 22 points in her 1st 6 appearances, she has now scored 60 in the past 6 with highs of 19, 13 and 10 points. The 19 points came in a 74-54 win over Monticello last week. Her season’s averages are now 7-5-and-2.
Nyamer Diew, Worthington, 6-1, sophomore, forward
Diew played in the state tournament for Marshall as an 8th grader 2 years ago, then the family moved to Worthington where she has continued to blossom in every phase of the game. She is now scoring 16 ppg with 8 boards and 2 blocks. She scored a career high of 29 last week in a 66-53 win over Austin.
Lizzy Dodge, Woodbury, junior, forward
Dodge averages just 5 ppg, but in the past couple of weeks she has scored a career high of 18 against arch-rival East Ridge, then scored 14 last week in a close loss to Edina.
Megan Hendrickson, Menahga, 6-0, junior, forward
OK, this is stretching the meaning of the word “breakout.” Hendrickson is a junior, returning starter for a team that remains unbeaten and is among the top 5 in Class A. She is a proven contributor to an outstanding team. But most of you, I bet, have not heard of her. Thus a little recognition is in order, and the fact that she scored a career high 27 points last week in a 87-51 win over Browerville provides the opportunity.
Hannah Lamkin, Eagan, 5-8, junior, guard
Lamkin is also a junior, but getting noticed in Eagan is different that not getting noticed in Menahga. Her team is struggling (1-17), but Lamkin continues to gain consistency. She is now averaging 10 ppg after scoring a career high 18 last week in a 56-38 loss to Shakopee.
Shyanne Loiland, Crosby-Ironton, 6-0, sophomore, forward
Loiland is a swiss army knife, leading CI with 18 ppg, 8 boards and 5 steals while also recording 3 assists per game. She broke loose for a career high 30 points in a 71-23 win over Pillager last week.
Top Team
In Class A, Minneota shocked Lac Qui Parle Valley and also defeated Yellow Medicine East to get to 16-3. They moved from #22A to #16A in our rankings.
In Class AA, Stewartville continued their hot streak, beating then-#4A Goodhue 62-41 and Byron 75-45. They are also 16-3 and moved from #10AA to #8AA.
In Class AAA, Hermantown won 3 times last week to run their winning streak to 10. They are now 19-2 and moved up from #8AAA to #7AAA.
In Class AAAA, Maple Grove was most impressive, running their winning string to 9 straight games and remaining at #9AAAA.
Top Breakout Team
Looking again by class…. In Class A, Mayer Lutheran jumped back into our ratings with an easy with over then #14 Heritage Christian. They’re now 11-6, rated #19, and the new favorite for the Section 4A.
In AA, I like St. Peter with 6 straight wins including wins over New Ulm and Fairmont last week. The Saints are now 11-6 and moved into our ratings at #25.
In AAA, Alexandria gave Willmar their 1st taste of defeat this season, and also thereby made it 7 in a row. The Cards are 13-3 and rated #14AAA.
In AAAA, St. Louis Park moved up incrementally from #20AAAA to #18 after sweeping Kennedy and Jefferson. I wonder how often that has happened in the past 25 years? The Orioles are now 12-6.
