Just for the record, the higher seed has now won 265 section games while losing just 44. And, if your idea of an upset is a win by a team that is more than just one seed lower than the team it beats, then there have been just 12 of those so far.
• Section 1A: #12 Southland defeated #5 Houston 61-43
• Section 3A: #6 Adrian 36 #3 Red Rock Central 34
• Section 4A: #6 Lester Prairie 58 #3 CHOF 38
• Section 6A: #5 Underwood 65 #1 Wheaton 64
• Section 7A: #10 Wrenshall 65 #7 Hill City 27
• Section 8A: #7 Win-E-Mac 53 #2 Clearbrook-Gonvick 50
• Section 8A: #6 Lake of the Woods 59 #3 Kelliher-Northome 58
• Section 2AA: #6 Gibbon-Fairfax Winthrop 53 #3 Sibley East 46
• Section 3AA: #6 Redwood Valley 67 Jackson County Central 54
• Section 5AA: #10 Blake 39 #7 Providence 34
• Section 6AA: #6 Kimball 49 #3 Royalton 46
• Section 5AAAA: #4 Park Center 81 #1 Centennial 75
Now, among all upsets, including those where the winner was just one seed lower than the loser, just 2 teams have pulled off 2 upsets so far:
• Section 6A: #5 Underwood defeated #4 Hancock 59-50 before shocking #1 Wheaton
• Section 8A: #7 Win-E-Mac defeated #2 Clearbrook-Gonvick and then #6 Lake of the Woods
But, of course, the biggest upsets turn out to be games between teams rated just one seed apart, such as #3-seed Mpls. South’s 52-47 shocker over #2 Wayzata in Section 6AAAA.

The Envelopes, Please…
Breakout Player of the Week
First of all, our Breakout Player. There were no other candidates. She is Juel Skrein, freshman guard for St. Croix Lutheran. She is averaging, or was averaging 7 ppg with a high of 16. She scored 9 in a 76-30 section win over St. Paul Highland Park, then broke loose for a career high 28 in a section loss to Simley, 58-54.
Player of the Week
Our 10 candidates are listed elsewhere. The winner is Morgan Hill of Mpls. South, as she scored 57 points in 2 games, including 27 in the big upset over Wayzata.
Team of the Week
It makes up in marquee value what it lacks in the seed spread, so Mpls. South’s win over Wayzata is the big upset of the 1st week of the post-season and so Mpls. South is our Team of the Week.
Breakout Team of the Week
Our Breakout Team award is shared by the 2 2-time upset winners, Underwood and Win-E-Mac.
Coach of the Week
Nathan McGuire, Mpls. South
