It is also a talented yet still underappreciated group that possesses nice depth. This article will focus on the Top-10 prospects in this position group, and we’ll take a look at what should make each of them intriguing to coaches at the next level.
- Katie Davidson, 2020, 5-11 W, Lawrence North H.S.
Katie is one of those kids who is difficult to label by a position. At the end of the day, she’s just a tough-nosed basketball player. She has very good size and strength, she’s physical, and she plays with a good motor. She can handle it a little, she can shoot it a little, she rebounds well for being a wing player, and she’s a versatile defender who can even guard some bigs. You can call her a big guard, a ‘3’, a point forward, whatever you want, I just know she can play. She already holds a couple of Big East offers.
- Ella Collier, 2020, 5-10 G, Danville Community H.S.
Ella Collier of Danville
Ella isn’t necessarily a late-bloomer skillfully, but physically she has gotten stronger and grown a couple of inches later than most girls. She is an extremely long, fluid, and smooth wing, and she is probably the best pure shooter in Indiana in this class. In fact, when I saw her at the IGBRR event a couple of weeks ago, she had on plain white shoes, basic gray shorts, and she looked like she could have been mistaken for Jimmy Chitwood’s daughter, ready to run the “Picket Fence”. She too already holds Division I offers.
- Juliana Kemper, 2020, 5-9 G, Lawrenceburg H.S.
Juliana isn’t as well-known statewide as some of these other girls, and part of it is being located in a small Ohio River town just West of Cincinnati. Let me tell you, though, she has some game. She has broad shoulders, length, and she’s a strong athlete in all directions, including vertically. She’s a capable ball-handler, she’s a nice perimeter shooter, and she can defend multiple positions. She is so unselfish, though, that she could take over games a lot more but doesn’t, yet she still averaged 21.8 points and 10.5 rebounds per game last year.
- Sydney Watkins, 2020, 5-9 G, Heritage Christian School
Sydney is an athletic talent just lurking in the shadows. She has been able to develop and do her thing at Heritage Christian, while Katlyn Gilbert (2018) and Ariana Wiggins (2021) drew all of the attention. This year she’ll be in more of the spotlight, though. Sydney is long, athletic in all directions, and she plays with a nonstop motor. She can defend 84-feet, and she is great in the passing lanes. She just has a natural feel for the game, and offensively she can score it at all levels, but she also finds the open teammate.
- Jackie Maulucci, 2020, 5-8 G, Hamilton Southeastern H.S.
I included Jackie in the article about Class of 2020 Stock-Risers, but I do want to touch on her game a bit here as well. She has very good length, she’s a fluid athlete, and she has a very good sense for the game. She doesn’t turn it over a lot, and she can score it a little at each level, plus she can slide over and play a point guard role. She has overcome a Fall 2016 knee injury, and she just looks more explosive and confident each time I see her. She will be a key reserve on an HSE team returning all five starters.
- Sydney Jacobsen, 2020, 5-8 G, West Lafayette Harrison H.S.
Sydney Jacobsen of Harrison
Sydney is one of the most productive high school basketball players anywhere in the state, regardless of class. She is fairly strong, tough-nosed and gritty, and she’s highly skilled. She averaged 22.3 points last season as a Sophomore, while also shooting 46% from 3-point range (82-179). She has good ball skills, and she is a really nice game manager as a point guard, but considering how well she shoots / scores it, I would be running her off screens, trying to get her open as much as possible.
- Lydia Reimbold, 2020, 5-9 G, Bishop Luers H.S.
Lydia is another player I’m not sure many people statewide are terribly familiar with. She is a long, fluid, and fairly athletic guard who does a little of everything well. She can hit shots from the perimeter or glide through defenses to the basket, plus she’s a capable ball-handler who can slide over to the point guard spot and run offense when needed. Defensively, as she’s gotten stronger, she has become much more effective and versatile. She’s been a really nice player, but I still think her best days are to come.
- Reganne Pate, 2020, 5-8 G, Penn H.S.
Reganne is another player I mentioned in the 2020 Stock-Risers article. I just remember how much of a rhythm she was in throughout July, burying shot after shot each game I saw of her. She is still a little thin, but she’s a tough kid for her size, and she isn’t afraid of competition. She has handled the ball some in the past, and if she can continue working on her handle to play more point guard, she could be that much more feared by opposing coaches. She’s another kid who should continue to improve with added strength.
- Sara Zabrecky, 2020, 5-8 G, Lake Central H.S.
Sara Zabrecky of Lake Central
I saw Sara a couple of times early in the high school season, a few times this spring, and a couple of times in July, and if she’s anything, she’s very consistent. She is a nice all-around basketball player, similar in many ways to a Sydney Jacobsen (above). Sara is a very good perimeter shooter, she can handle the ball some and play point guard on occasion, but again, like Jacobsen, she’s such a good shooter that I would want to run her off of screens constantly. Sara is just a nice, steady, heady ballplayer.
- Maddi Sears, 2020, 5-7 G, Carmel H.S.
Maddi is a tough-nosed, gritty, physical, yet skilled wing guard. She actually played some quality minutes on Varsity as just a Freshman and Sophomore for a loaded Carmel Greyhound squad. She can handle the ball a little bit, she’s a good one-directional athlete attacking the basket, and she can hit shots from the perimeter. I just like her tenacity and her basketball IQ. She rarely makes mistakes, and if she does, she’s the first one busting her tail to get the ball back.
