Here’s what you need to know about Region 6
Favorite: Velva
Velva’s been one of the best teams in all of Class B for a good chunk of the season. The Aggies have an elite defense as they surrender just 32 points per game. They’ve also shown they can pile up points as they are one of the top-five teams in the state in points per game as well. They beat Rugby, another contender, 32-30 in the District 11 final, which was critical as it sets up a matchup with Westhope-Newburg and more importantly, means they only have to beat one of Rugby and Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood to get to state.
Next Up: Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood, Rugby
The inherent disadvantage to not getting the top seed in this region is that the top three teams are really, really good, and the falloff after them is severe. Rugby and MLS are similar teams in that they grind teams to a pulp on the defensive end of the floor, slow things down offensively and make the game as painful as possible. Rugby won the regular season contest 35-28 and the postseason matchup figures to be a lot of the same.
Still Alive: Westhope-Newburg
The Sioux won just five games during the regular season but have enjoyed an extended stay in the postseason thanks to three wins. The Sioux beat TGU by seven to kick off district play and kept their season alive with a 46-39 win over Bottineau to advance to regionals. In the first round of the regional tournament, Westhope-Newburg beat Des Lacs Burlington – the runner-up in District 12 – in overtime. Now the Sioux will face Velva, arguably the best team in the state and a team they lost to by 49. They are playing with house money at this point though.
