Region 2 is one of the toughest in Class B North Dakota as two of the best five or six teams in the state reside in the region. After that, there are four more teams that posted winning records.
Here’s what you need to know about Region 2
Favorite: Grafton/St. Thomas
The Burros appear to be the heavy-ish favorite to win Region 2 as they went undefeated in Region play and only lost once to North Dakota competition all season. Grafton’s offense is one of the most high-powered in the state and the defense is strong to boot. The Burros played just five games that were decided by single-digits all season (3-2 in those contests).
Next Up: Thompson
The Tommies are right there with Grafton as one of the shortlist favorite teams to win a state championship this season. They lost to the Burros by nine earlier in the season and lost to Four Winds/Minnewaukan by six but have otherwise been very good against strong competition. Elite defense is the Tommies’ calling card as they surrender just 34 points per game.
In the Mix: Park River/Fordville-Lankin, May-Port-C-G
Park River/F-L went 16-6 on the season and has enjoyed a lot of success, winning by an average margin of 10 points per game on the season. But the Aggies’ pair of losses to Grafton illustrate just how big of a gap there is between the top two teams in the region and the next group of competitors. They lost twice to Grafton by a combined 65 points plus lost to Thompson by 17. It’ll be interesting to see if they can pull something off to keep a region semifinal game closer.
May-Port-C-G went 13-7 in the regular season but caught absolute flames over the second half of the year after a 3-6 start to the campaign. The Patriots lost by double figures to both Grafton and Thompson but given that it’s been a while since the teams all played, maybe they’ve closed that gap. Defense is their strength.
