Here’s a Way-too-Early Class B Preview
Kindred
The Vikings were extremely young last year, starting two freshmen and only graduating one senior from a state championship team. Look out for this group. It could be hanging a third banner in four years with Abby Duchscherer leading the way. Terryn Johnson and Kristina Freier and Jordyn Berner are all going to be back too.
Langdon/Edmore/Munich
Langdon looked like the favorite to win a state title going into the tournament a few weeks ago but the Cardinals were upset by Kindred before winning the next two games. The good news for LEM is that everybody should be back. Callie Ronningen should be one of the best players in the 2020 class.
Thompson
The Tommies were one of the five best teams in Class B pretty much throughout last winter and thing shouldn’t change much. Mackenzie Hughes and Kaia Sorby are both set to return which gives them an elite backcourt tandem. Macy Jordheim returns to give the Tommies a terrific frontcourt player.
Grafton/St. Thomas
The Spoilers don’t lose a whole lot after spending most of the season ranked in the top-three in Class B. Cassie and Carlee Sieben both return which gives the Spoilers an elite perimeter duo and Julia Dusek gives them a third solid scorer.
Kidder County
The Wolves went through the regular season and regionals undefeated but lost twice in the state tournament. There is a good chance they’ll get there again next winter though as all but one player are set to return. Madelyn Schmidt is one of the best players in the state and will be just entering her upperclass years.
Hettinger/Scranton
The Night Hawks lost just once in the regular season this past year and got to the state tournament before losing in hotly-contested fashion to two of the elite teams in the state. They should be strong next year as All-State players Sam Oase and Alyssa Andress are both set to return.
Four Winds/Minnewaukan
The Indians were one of the best teams in the state last year and consistently are among the best in Class B year in and year out. They graduate three seniors but quality players like Latasha Bellile, Riah Littleghost and Myona Dauphinais are all going to be back.
Velva
Velva was stuck in a logjam of a section with Rugby and Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood last year and while the tough competition likely won’t change, the Aggies should be equipped to handle it again next winter as they graduate just three seniors and return an All-Stater in Emma Passa.
Trenton
Fresh off a state tourney appearance, Trenton should be one of the better teams in Class B again next winter. Everybody should be back including Kaitlyn Hove, who earned All-State honors. Alexa and Alyssa St. Pierre both are back too.
Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood
The Mavericks were one of the top teams in Class B last season and made a decent run in the postseason before bowing out against Rugby – the eventual state runner up. The good news for the Mavs is that everybody should be back. All-State wing Leah Feland will lead the way.
