Here are a few takeaways from the season:
Devils Lake was dominant
The Firebirds were supposed to be a solid team last year as they’ve traditionally been. But they were much more than solid. Devils Lake lost just twice all year, getting to the state championship game and giving Bismarck Century a solid game before taking home a runner-up finish. Behind a balanced and efficient offense plus a very good defense, the Firebirds outscored opponents by an average of 26 points per game.
Fargo Shanley was very good and will continue to get better
Fargo Shanley ended the year on a sour note, losing its final three games, but the Deacons continued its tradition of good winters, going 20-6 on the year and getting to the state tournament. The Deacons lost to Bismarck Legacy and Grand Forks Red River in the tournament but they should be poised for a really good year next year as their two all conference players, Reile Payne and Hadley Huber are both set to be back.
The EDC should be strong going forward
A lot of the teams in the EDC figure to be strong going forward. Devils Lake is fresh off a state title game appearance and returns three starters, plus that program is always good. Fargo Shaley should be one of the best teams in the state next year. Fargo Davies was one of the youngest teams in the EDC and returns a number of key contributors after finishing the year playing well. West Fargo brings back two really good players including McKenna Becher. Grand Forks Red River returns three starters including all-league forward Shelby Frank.
