Here are a few takeaways from the season.
Bismarck Century was the best team by a wide margin…again
Bismarck Century went undefeated on the year and was challenged maybe three times along the way. The Patriots were the dominant team in Class A and behind Lilly Keplin and Lauren Ware, won more games by 30 than by less than 10. The Patriots will lose Keplin, but they won’t fall far as Ware figures to be the best player in the state again next year and the Patriots return a number of talented complementary players.
Mandan might’ve still been the second best team in the state
The Braves fizzled a bit down the stretch, getting blown out by Bismarck Century in the WDA Final and getting upset by West Fargo Sheyenne in the first round of the state tournament. Prior to that, the Braves were viewed as perhaps the team most equipped to knock off the Patriots. That didn’t manifest itself at all, but the Braves still might’ve been the second best team in the state. Devils Lake was the superior team in the EDC and hung tough with Bismarck Century and it’s a shame that we didn’t get to see Mandan face the Firebirds with a trip to the state title on the line.
Bismarck Legacy, Bismarck, Jamestown and Bismarck St. Mary’s should be strong going forward
The WDA should be strong next year.
Bismarck Legacy was the third best team in the league and the Sabers bring back three starters including Ariana Berryhill and Alexis Dressler.
Bismarck didn’t have a double figure scorer last season but the Demons won 15 games anyways. They bring back five key players.
Jamestown loses Courtney Peterson but returns everyone else from a team that won 12 games. Kameron Selvig and Grace Hegerle should be all-league players.
And Bismarck St. Mary’s is set to return three double figure scorers including Maria Mann. The Saints were up and down throughout last year but there’s a lot of talent in that program still.
