Milinda Arguellez 5’6 G Tucson Rattlers Black/Flowing Wells 2021
I don’t think this girl stopped talking or sprinting every time she was on the court. She is the anchor of her team’s defense, constantly calling out switches and rotations. She looked like a track star with how much she ran, how fast she ran, and how she never got tired. Milinda is an athlete who refuses to let her defender beat her.
Serrena Gonzales 5’3 G AZ Swish/Valley Vista 2020
Gonzales was so pesky! She is 5’3 and played like the biggest irritant you’ve ever seen. She was so ferocious with her defense and took each time on defense as a challenge. When her team needed a turnover, she would stick her nose in there and get a tip ball or steal. She had a couple of turnovers that she immediately got back due to her will for the ball.
Brooke Rodgers 5’8 G 602 Lady Nation/Cactus Shadows 2020
Rodgers played excellent defense. In many people’s eyes they may not think she did because she didn’t have a ton of steals or blocks. If you know basketball, you know what she did. She took her opponent out of the game and out of their offense. She didn’t get any blocks or steals because she refused to let her opponent catch the ball. That type of defense is tiring and takes a lot of will to keep that up for an entire game.
Jasmine Singleton 5’6 G 602 Lady Nation/Millennium 2020
Singleton was really good at trapping her defender in a corner and not letting them out. She moves her feet very well and has great side to side mobility and quickness. You can tell that she took pride in locking her defender up, always clapping and talking. Singleton was fun to watch and a true competitor.
Alyssa Brown 6’1 F AZ Supreme/Sahuaro 2021
Don’t go up for a lay up on Alyssa Brown, just don’t do it or your shot is getting smacked into the wall. Brown had great timing on her blocks and even got a few big time chase down blocks as well. It seems like she doesn’t care about fouls or being physical. She almost looks like she took it as an insult that you tried to shoot over her and will do everything in her power to send that shot right back into the stands. In the low post, she was very effective as a defender too due to how physical she plays. Ali Zelaya is one of the best low post scorers in AZ and Brown took that as a challenge and did everything she could to push her out of the paint.
