But this weekend we got to see some home grown talent right in our backyard. PGH stopped by Augustana University, the host site for the annual SD Heat Hardwood Classic. Here are some day one stories and standouts.
Maren Nerem of the Pentagon Schoolers 17u Brown squad looked very impressive on day one. At times she would post up and finish with a strong move to the basket. Other times you could find her attacking from the wing getting downhill.
On that same squad Megan Fannin showed what she does well and that’s score! She a natural at it, with an array of options. Fanning has the ability to pull from anywhere. She can attack at all three levels. Needs to be a bit more solid on defense but can guard most players her size.
ND Attack 17u was out in front in Pool B with nice wins against Pentagon Schoolers Brown and Sacred Hoops Mahoney. One player in particular, Kiera Eli looked poised. Eli seemed to make timely baskets just when ND Attack needed them. Against the Schoolers Brown, she closed out the half with a great baseline rip scoring with a floater. Throughout the game Eli showed she can step up in big moments, especially as the game got close. She hit a big three then got a huge deflection to seal the game.
Sacred Hoops 17u Beebout has a nice point guard on their roster. Tishara Hardy has nice bounce with the ball. Hardy was able to create space to attack the paint. Something great guards do well. She found her teammates open shots by using her relentless ability to drive and draw double teams.
The matchup between her Sacred Hoops squad and the Pentagon Schoolers Borchers was not ideal. As the Schoolers just had too much for them. Players like Autumn Wilkinson seemed to have an open corner 3 more times than often. Although Sacred Hoops had a few athletic players, their skill set couldn’t match those of the Schoolers.
