I’ve compiled a list of four players who I thought stood out among their peers during the tournament. These are individuals that immediately caught my eye for one reason or another. Coaches and scouts are always searching for the next rising star, and I think all four of these girls have the potential to make an impact at the college level.
Diavian Spencer – 2020 5’4 G (Texas Elite 17U Colbert) Martin HS – The first thing that stood out to me about Spencer was her speed with the ball. She loves to push the tempo on offense and is at her best when she is running in transition. However, she knows when to slow it down too and is able to control the pace of the game. Spencer is also able to hold her own on defense. She is a scrappy defender on the perimeter and does a really good job of anticipating passing lanes and turning steals into easy layups for her team. I could certainly see her being a valuable contributor at the next level.
Alysa Davis – 5′ 6 G (Lady Rhythm) – Davis is your prototype shooting guard. She has a great release on her jump shot and displayed her ability to score both inside and outside. She also has a really nice mid-range game, which is refreshing to see when you consider the increased importance young players are placing on the 3-point shot. However, the most impressive thing to me about Davis was her ability to move without the ball on offense and get to her spots. That coupled with her ability to catch and shoot makes her a valuable offensive weapon for any program.
Sensors Barrientos – 2021 5’4 G (UA Austin Defenders 16U) – It did not take long for me to notice Barrientos. She is a combo guard who is very comfortable running an offense. She was not the tallest or most athletic player on the court, but she was always the smartest. You can just tell she has a high basketball IQ. She is a natural ball handler and facilitator with an affinity for the 3-point shot, but at the same time she doesn’t force up bad shots. Barrientos has a very smooth game and plays with a ton of poise and confidence, which is something that often goes overlooked.
Amaya Howard – 2020 5’7 G/F (Cal Sparks San Diego) Christian HS – The Cal Sparks made the journey from California to Texas for this tournament. That said, Howard appeared to be unaffected by the change in scenery. Howard has a pure jump shot. While she seemed most comfortable in catch and shoot scenarios, she can make shots of the dribble as well. She has a nice little pull up jumper in her arsenal too and she isn’t afraid to utilize it in transition. Although Howard can play the point guard position well, she is at her best when she is playing off the ball.
