I also love seeing progression on the court, this is also great because some players start out with a bang early and noise comes from them as they get older, simple matter why ranking elementary school players makes no sense on the girls side and please don’t get that confused with me saying a 4th or 5th grader is a D1 Lock because there is no me and I haven’t been wrong yet. I’m also not wrong about some of the guards who just went completely off during the Tyrone Johnson Showcase from the 2020 Class and here they are
Aakiyah SorrellsAakiyah Sorrells (Austin Elite 17U) catch and shoot players always impress me and with her athleticism and energy, she showed me so much over the weekend that I was somewhat speechless. When you can shoot, mid to long range and understand that your first step opens many doors, you’re definitely on to something and she was on fire in so many ways as not only did she score but defended
Hailey Smith (Austin Elite Supergirls) she dives on the floor after loose balls, she plays hard defense baseline to baseline, she battles taller players for rebounds, all of those qualities are great, but watching her throw crisp passes between defenders, aka threading the needle, for assists all makes a pretty nice cake. The icing on that cake is her ability to create and knock down shots mid to long range consistently
Maya Simon-guard (Corpus Christi Thunder White) saw this squad multiple times and in the opening game, I loved her “ups” as she elevates over players. She has length, athletic and runs floor in transition yet when she dropped the 3 at the buzzer on Sunday for the win, that did it
Zion Neat (Fury Haney/Brinkoeter Orange) it seems like everyone knew her off the court, I mean everyone as her personality was definitely impressive however on the court, she was in a zone and she also burst up plenty zones as I watched her drop 25 footers with ease but she doesn’t just stand out and shoot threes. She attacks the basket well, finishes strong and rebounds on both ends, recently committed to Southern Arkansas
Miannah LittleMiannah Little (Waco Lady Panthers) when I say scoring in “droves” you would have to understand what droves actually means and not be confused with attacking the basket, she does that well, she also puts up numbers quickly and efficiently from all over the court. Range was already there, it just kept getting deeper but her ability to create under pressure makes her hard to handle
Jayda Argumon (SETX 17U) explosive off the dribble as well as the pull-up but she falls into that “scorers mentality” category but also understands how to get hers in the flow. Handles that ball well under pressure, sees the floor and doesn’t mind battling for rebounds against taller players plus she loves to not only take the heat, she applies it as well because she’s an “in your face” defender
Mariya Scott (Lady Thunder) when I first saw her, sometime before high school, the main thing that stood out was her “poise under pressure” playing against older and stronger players. Many don’t notice the little things, I notice everything, especially mannerisms. That confidence has only gotten better as she wants the ball in crunch time and can deliver, mid, long, attacking the basket, whatever it takes
