I caught Summer Creek at the Texas Southern University Team Camp, they were without 2020 Mailyn Wilkerson but did she ever put on a show. I also caught The Village who were missing both 2020 Emily Dobaste and 2021 Tymberlin Criswell, both in the Top 100 of their respective classes and it was my first good look at Cinco Ranch who I glanced at in the North Shore Fall League. Clear Springs left a lasting impression, Cedar Park played in a higher classification and showed they could definitely make a deep run in the playoffs and Langham Creek has several pieces to their puzzle already in place. Heights was shorthanded but Tierra Simon was back, to go along with Gracelynn Alvarez and Cyncere Roberts, who will join the other two in my updated 2021 Top 100 and Heights is probably the best squad in HISD and with all of their pieces, who knows? Bellaire and Manvel brought plenty of energy, showed me glimpses of what could happen and the athleticism and energy Hasting brought kept me going. Speaking of going, it’s going to be hard to keep a healthy Cy Creek from heading back to state but it’s not a given, at least not yet because the season is young and today I’ll get my first looks at both Lutheran North and College Station but let me add some players to the Top 100 from their respective classes after day 1 but stay tuned, plenty coming from the event all week
Mailyn Wilkerson2020
Mailyn Wilkerson-5’6 PG (Summer Creek) explosive scorer, creates off the dribble and just has range out of this world but she always could shoot the long ball and she has always been under control yet she’s attacking from various angles and finishing with contact but in this era of basketball, it’s always good to see players understanding clock management and she slowed her team during the right time and controlled the tempo so always remember, the game starts at the one
Catherine Hursh-5’8 G (Cinco Ranch) her dad showed me something I wrote about her in middle school playing up “really looked good until I found out she’s a 2020 and oh my, I found another one early. This young lady can do a lot of things offensively but I really like her demeanor playing up and she’s definitely going to make some noise at Cinco” and I’m not going to even say I was right because you should know that by now. I lost track of her but she fills it up from everywhere and defied gravity
2021
Alisa KnightAlisa Knight-5’7 G (Cedar Park) one of the most athletic players in the state, her ups and timing combined with body control is second to none, she applies heat on defense, baseline to baseline and is one of those “never takes a play off” types of players and that is just another piece to what I’m thinking will be a deep run for her team. The midrange pull-up, even the long range is fluid and consistent, her first step is what keeps defenses guessing but when both parents starred at BCS colleges …….
2022
Kenna GibsonKenna Gibson-5’6 G (Clear Springs) she changed her number and had me guessing until back to back threes gave me my answer. Okay, she shoots the long ball with the best of them but her attacking the basket and finishing strong over and over not mention her “seeing the floor” and “threading the needle” for assists against some heated competition definitely is why she’s moving up. Her defense was on point but what I really enjoyed, which was the icing on the cake, was seeing her play the passing lane
