Many of the area’s top high school teams had multiple girls playing against each other on the teams selected by Michael. Here are a few of the teammate-turned-foe matchups that were fun to watch this past weekend:
Gabrielle Schwartz – Tatyanna Clayburne
Both juniors hail from Perry, a solid young team that projects to be among the state’s best in the 2019-20 season. Schwartz excelled in the game the two face off by driving to the basket for shots near the hoop and playing great on-ball defense, utilizing her size. Clayburne was good as her team’s lead guard, distributing the ball for teammates to get good shots and driving the lane herself.
Ava Ferraro – Marisa Davis-Jones
The Valley Vista pair (there were a few girls from this team that always competes for championships as of recent) were both quality in this event. Davis-Jones did just about everything, using her size and strength to manufacture shots near the hoop, but also having the skills to dribble up the floor even as one of the bigger players on the court in this game. Ferraro flashed some good guard skills, moving quickly on the floor and distributing the ball, while also finding her shot within the flow of the offense.
Annamarie Tucker – Devyn O’Brien
Casteel shocked some by making this year’s final four at ASU in 5A, but these two were some of the solid players that helped the Colts make that run and seem to have a bright future. O’Brien played good defense near the basket, set great screens and was talking a lot, even though many of the girls had never played together before. Tucker showed some great guard skills that she has developed since her freshman season, and stood out even on a team full of quality handlers.
