Things change and shift opinions pretty often, my predictions made a couple of months ago are most likely different from what they are now as I’ve had more time to be around the players and evaluate them further.
State Championship Favorite: Millennium
I still think Millennium is the favorite in 5A this season. They’re bringing back a ton of talent and some young players that I think will have huge seasons. Ali Zelaya and Jasmine Singleton both return for their final season with the Tigers. Zelaya is a North Carolina commit while Singleton has committed to UNLV. That in itself is a ton of talent and would make for a good team but then you look at the additional pieces around them. Trayanna Crisp is going to have a huge season. She looks ready to take on a bigger role and will produce more numbers this season. Amoret Maxwell is also another good role player that I think will have a big impact on their season.
State Championship Runner-Up: Casteel
I’ve gotten the chance to see the Casteel girls more in depth and I think they could really make a run at the championship this year. I do think the transfer of Devyn O’Brien does hurt them a bit, especially matching up against Millennium. They could have had two 6 foot + players to use to match up against Zelaya, but now they will have to rely on Liz Cruz heavily in that match up. Cruz is a very good player but if you can have two big players to help try and limit Zelaya, why not take it? I think their guard play matches up quite nicely with Millenniums. I know the Casteel players are very upset after losing last year in the final 4. They want revenge and have that goal in their mind. I think that passion and energy could be what takes them over the hump in 5A.
