It’s never too early for way-too-early season. With the winter season around the proverbial corner, it’s time to start thinking about the 2019-20 basketball season.
Here are some teams that could show the most improvement from a season ago:
Fargo Davies
The Eagles proved to be dangerous last year despite starting multiple underclassmen including all-EDC forward Taylor Fey. Davies returns starting guard Ryleigh Wacha who averaged 10 points and nearly four assists as a sophomore which should provide stability and growth. The Eagles also return rotation players in Taylor Froslie, Taylor Safranski who played solid minutes as a freshman, Ava Wild and Brooklyn Koenig.
Jamestown
The Bluejays went .500 last year and showed they can compete against some of the top teams in the WDA despite playing a lot of youth. Jamestown will return four starters including all-WDA caliber players in Kameron Selvig and Grace Hegerle. Ella Falk played solid minutes as an eighth-grader a year ago and could join them in that upper-echelon category as soon as this winter. And there’s plenty of young talent in the program that could join the varsity ranks in the near future. This team has the ability to contend for a top-four finish this winter and could be on the rise for a few years.
Williston
The Coyotes made a big improvement last year, going from four wins in 2017-18 to 13 which included a state tourney appearance. They won’t add nine wins to their record again, but the Coyotes have the talent to not only make another state tournament ultimately, but enjoy a more consistent season as a whole. With five of their six rotation players back including all-conference caliber players in Brooklyn Douglas and Makia Remus, Williston has the ability to push for a top-three or four finish in the WDA.
Wahpeton
The Huskies won just seven games a year ago, but could double that this winter. They graduated just one senior and return all-league forward Jordyn Kahler who averaged 15 points and better than five rebounds as a junior. Emily DeVries also returns after a solid junior year and the Huskies will have a lot of collective experience in a solid group of seniors.
