WNBA Comps for Underrated Texas Prospects

WNBA Comps for Underrated Texas Prospects

The first round of the 2019 WNBA Playoffs tipped off Wednesday night. That makes this the perfect time to compare some of the best prospects I’ve seen this summer to the top female players in the world. These are not projections of any kind. I am simply pointing out the WNBA players that these individuals remind me of. I am aware that no comparison is perfect. However, it’s a common exercise in the world of sports, and serves as a good introduction to some of the more underrated prospects in the state of Texas. [player_tooltip player_id="100103" first="Molly" last="Kaiser"] – 2020 5’8 G (Nike Texas Select) Saginaw HS WNBA Comp - Maya Moore Like I said, these are not projections. Maya Moore is one of the most accomplished basketball players, male or female, to ever play the game. She’s one of the greatest scorers the WNBA has ever seen. Moore can get you a bucket from pretty much anywhere. That’s why [player_tooltip player_id="100103" first="Molly" last="Kaiser"] reminds me of Moore. Kaiser is an all-around stud. She is an excellent ball handler and a versatile scorer on offense. She is a good shooter from behind the arc and an elite shooter from mid-range. Furthermore, her ability to shoot off the dribble makes her a threat to score whenever she touches the ball. Moore and Kaiser are both walking buckets. Kamen Wong – 2022 PG (Lady Dragonfly) Frisco Liberty HS WNBA Comp - Courtney Vandersloot Courtney Vandersloot has been the best passer in the WNBA for the past few years. She has led the league in assists in four of the last five seasons. Despite being relatively undersized, Vandersloot has developed into one of the best playmakers in WNBA history. Her style of play reminds me of another undersized point guard, 2022 prospect Kamen Wong. Like Vandersloot, Wong is a smart player who knows how to manipulate the defense and exploit its weak spots. Her speed, high IQ, and fearlessness more than make up for her size. Wong can do more than pass though. She can also hit threes with consistency. Additionally, she is a crafty finisher inside. I think Wong is an elite playmaker and an underrated scorer, not unlike Vandersloot. Asia Parker – 2020 6’0 G/F (Rose City Lady Warriors) John Tyler HS WNBA Comp - DeWanna Bonner DeWanna Bonner has developed into a dominant point forward. She has tremendous range as a shooter and has great touch in the post. Bonner is also a very solid rebounder and passer. She can do it all at a high level. Her combination of size and skill is unique. I’ve selected her as Asia Parker’s comp because of the two-time WNBA champion’s overall versatility. Parker blew me away when I saw her play this summer. She is aggressive on the offensive end and can score in a variety of ways. Like Bonner, she is pretty efficient with the three ball. Additionally, both players are really good ball handlers and passers at the forward spot. It’s also worth noting that Bonner and Parker are capable of guarding positions one through five on defense. A’Cya Narcisse – 2023 PG (Lady Drive Nation) WNBA Comp - Skylar Diggins-Smith I’ve been a big fan of Skylar Diggins-Smith ever since she and the Tulsa Shock relocated to Dallas back in 2015. The Dallas Wing’s star point guard is a lot of fun to watch play. Her game is so smooth. She has numerous ways to score, but she is at her best when she is attacking on the drive. I got serious Diggins-Smith vibes while watching 2023 prospect A’Cya Narcisse play. Her ability to convert on a bunch of acrobatic lay ups likely had something to do with it. That isn’t the only thing these two have in common. Although they are both their teams best scoring option, they are still willing passers who like to get their teammates involved. Don’t be surprised if Narcisse begins to receive more attention down the road as she continues to develop her game.
