Continuing with the “Breakout Season” series by class, it is onto the 2021 class of juniors. Junior year is quite possibly the most important high school season for player’s recruitment. It is the final high school season before their final club season in the spring where colleges will aggressively go after “incoming seniors”. Below are just some of the players I believe will help themselves this winter.
2021 Breakout Players:
2021 6’3 C Samantha Skaggs (King’s HS) – A strong, left-handed post presence who was really solid a season ago, but she should take that jump in her junior year. Post players typically take a little bit longer to develop into the best version of themselves and Skaggs is still years away from that obviously, but she has taken a step in the right direction with her game overall. She can provide some rim protection, she rebounds well and defenders are not usually ready to defend her left hand around the basket. She should provide a big time inside presence for King’s after transferring in from Bellevue Christian.
2021 5’8 SG Delaney Pink (Chiawana HS) – Delaney was a piece to Chiawana’s 4A State tourney run last year, but she is ready to take on more of a leadership role in her junior year. Delaney’s shooting vastly improved from a year ago and she can play some on or off the ball. She has a handful of Division 1 schools tracking her progress and she should boost her stock some more with a strong winter.
2021 5’11 SF Jaliyah Sampson (Rainier Beach HS) – Jaliyah is one of Washington’s best kept secrets. She has a solid frame and possesses some natural athleticism that cannot be taught. Rainier Beach is not known for its girls basketball, but she should put together a quality individual season. *Feature image
2021 5’7 PG Andie Zylak (Lewis and Clark HS) – Andie had some shining moments last year, but she was more of a role player on a veteran led team from last year. With a bulk of the scoring and play making gone from last year’s 4A state runner up, Andie will have to step up and I expect her to have some pretty big individual performances.
2021 5’6 PG Karina McMillan (Sumner HS) – Karina’s numbers were more modest last year, but she always brought it on the defensive end for Sumner. In the 2019-2020 season, I expect that she will take her offensive game to the next level, as Karina’s skill set and confidence has continued to grow over time
