The play was competitive and the many college coaches in attendance took notice. Here are some of the top scorers from the tournament.
Seairra Hughes, 2020, 5-11, F, Vista PEAK
Averaging 13.7 points a game, Hughes was unstoppable. The Vista PEAK senior played well with her teammates and worked particularly well with guards like Elaina Martinez and Yara Garcia. Hughes put up seven, 16 and 18 points, respectively, while holding down the defensive end of the floor, rebounding and starting the fast break.
Tomia Johnson, 2020, 5-6, G, Grandview
The only player at the tournament to score double figures in all three games, Johnson poured in 12, 12 and 18 points in her three games. What was perhaps most impressive was how she scored in a number of different ways from driving both ways to the basket and shooting from both the long- and mid-range. Johnson also put her passing ability and defense on display, and was the driving force for her team.
Krystina Hagood, 2020, 5-7, G, Sand Creek
Hagood averaged 11.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.1 blocks per game as a junior at Sand Creek last winter. That type of activity is rarely matched by her opponents and the Sand Creek senior was predictably active at the showcase on Saturday. Hagood scored double figures in two of three games and also found a number of other ways to impact the game for her team.
Mia Collins, 2021, 5-5, PG/SG, Cherokee Trail
Collins was a terror all day long, disrupting other teams’ developing chemistry with her defense. Typically, Collins matched up against the other team’s point guard or top scoring threat and got her hands on steal after steal all day long. Those turnovers frequently turned into instant offense for the Cherokee Trail junior.
Elaina Martinez, 2021, 5-7, G, Mullen
The Mullen Mustangs won the Class 4A state championship this past season and with a lot of that winning firepower returning, should play heavily into decided the title once again this winter. Martinez will play a big role in Mullen’s hopeful title defense and showed why on Saturday, constantly attacking the basket with her driving ability and setting up teammates like Seairra Hughes.
