So, I took a look back at those articles, and I’ve attempted to predict what this season might hold in Class 1A. Taking some ideas from college preview magazines of years past, I’ve assembled this article with a variety of things, like a preseason team poll, preseason awards, and preseason all-state teams.
PRESEASON POLL
The preseason poll is based solely on how I think teams will stack up this season in Class 1A. Past success isn’t meaningless, but year-in and year-out rosters change, and teams can slide up or down the scale in terms of competitiveness. In Class 1A that’s magnified even greater, as just one top player can typically shift the balance of power in a Sectional, Regional, or even Semi-State. This season, it just so happens that both Marquette Catholic and Vincennes Rivet have been moved up to Class 2A due to the tournament success factor (both were State Finalists in 2018 & 2019). University High School has moved up as well. That leaves Class 1A pretty wide open now, and it should be a lot of fun trying to figure this thing out all season.
Southern Indiana is looking pretty strong on paper, even minus Rivet and University, and I chose Loogootee to start the season at #1 due to their strong backcourt play. Tecumseh has a really talented and young frontline. Oregon-Davis returns a ton, and they are always a threat in the North with their pressing, fast-paced style of play. Jac-Cen-Del is always well-coached and competitive, North Vermillion looks to mirror what they did last season, and Lanesville’s youth movement should finally start turning that corner towards maturity and experience. Like I said above, this should be fun watching Class 1A play out during the 2019-2020 season.
PGH Indiana Class 1A Preseason Top-10 (2018-2019 record):
1. Loogootee (21-4)
2. Tecumseh (19-6)
3. Oregon-Davis (15-9)
4. Jac-Cen-Del (21-6)
5. North Vermillion (24-3)
6. Lanesville (18-7)
7. Trinity Lutheran (17-10)
8. Morgan Township (15-9)
9. Union City (14-9)
10. North Central-Farmersburg (16-9)
PRESEASON AWARDS
These preseason awards are an attempt at honoring girls who I think stand out in Class 1A. There are multiple candidates for each award, and every award is easily debatable, but I chose them based on who I thought filled the description the best. Each award is determined through different criteria, as some awards are based primarily on opinion, while others are decided with a heavy influence from statistical merit.
