Continue ReadingThe Dickinson Midgets had a difficult season a year ago, going 6-16 on the season while struggling mightily through the middle of the year. They showed they were capable of competing with some of the best teams, losing by four to Bismarck Legacy, then 10 to Legacy, 10 to Bismarck and three to Watford City. But they couldn’t seem to get over the hump. They return four starters.
GO-TO PLAYER: Peyton Selle
Selle was the team’s second-leading scorer last year, averaging 10.3 points and better than seven rebounds per game. She missed six games, which undoubtedly hurt Dickinson’s chances, but she’s got the ability to be one of the best all-around scorers in the WDA. She knocked down 35 percent of her 3-pointers on limited attempts. If she takes a few more and maintains her efficiency of last season, she could average 14-17 points per game.
BREAKOUT CANDIDATE: Symone Beld
Beld saw a lot of minutes as a sophomore and had plenty of good moments, averaging more than six points and three rebounds per game. She’s a solid 3-point shooter, knocking down nearly 35 percent of her attempts on about 2.5 per game. She’ll have an opportunity to step into a featured offensive role as the Midgets attempt to replace the 19 points per game they lost with Gabrielle Jung’s graduation.
SEASON OUTLOOK
Dickinson will undoubtedly have a hard time replacing Jung, who was one of the best players in the WDA last season. But with four starters back, the Midgets can lean on experience and balance more than star-power. There could be strength in numbers as many of those young players gained valuable playing time a year ago. It’ll take a big step forward to talk about competing towards the top of the WDA, but this team could reasonably be improved in 2019-20.
