Youth wasn’t the crux though, as the Spartans rostered eight seniors and four juniors. With just three rotation players back from last year, there will be a lot of fresh faces.
GO-TO PLAYER: Jennie Sem
Sem is one of the better returning all-around players in the EDC. At 5-foot-9, she’s a skilled 3-point shooter, a solid playmaker and a steady rebounder. She averaged 10 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as a junior and knocked down better than 37 percent of her attempts from deep. She’s got all-league potential this winter if she builds on those numbers.
BREAKOUT CANDIDATE: Grace Miller, Ava Kalbrener, Maggie Benson
Miller, Kalbrener and Benson all saw sparing minutes last year at the varsity level behind upperclassmen and will now step into much more prominent roles. One or two of the three likely starts and all three will almost certainly play significant minutes.
Miller’s just a sophomore, but she’s got the opportunity on the wing to be one of the team’s featured offensive players. Benson likely steps into a featured frontcourt role. At 6-foot, she’s one of the team’s tallest players and will be relied upon to rebound and defend the interior.
SEASON OUTLOOK
The Spartans head into the 2019-20 season with a lot of question marks. After winning just four games, maybe a lot of fresh faces can be viewed as a positive though. They’ll likely rely on those four seniors but also a lot of young kids will see opportunity for playing time. This could be something of a developmental season for the Spartans, but that brings potential surprise along with optimism.
