Continue ReadingKilee Wood was asked to do a lot of things that don’t necessarily match up with her natural skill set in 2018-19, but the Falcon guard never complained when she was called upon to bang in the post or take on a less-than-ideal defensive matchup.
That’s kind of Wood’s modus operandi: just doing whatever her team needs her to do.
It hasn’t always been fun but Wood taking on a number of different roles for the Falcons has also forced her to learn new skills and to get tougher as a player. That’s good news for a player that wants to play college basketball and her coach thinks that’s a real possibility as she continues to improve.
“She’s definitely a vocal leader for the team,” Falcon head coach Tarike Adams said. “But she’ll break out. She wants to be that dynamic type of player. But in my program, guards have to be able to post up. So she’s a tough player.”
Wood had to play in the post a lot last season despite being a natural guard but as a sophomore last winter, the 5-foot-8 shooting guard averaged 9.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 2.9 steals a game for the Falcons, who finished the season at 10-15 with an exceedingly young roster that included just two seniors.
She needs to improve her left hand and is working hard on it and she can shoot the ball when she gets in the right spot, and Wood is also working to improve her jump shot. Adams thinks if things come together, Wood could fit the profile of a JUCO player with room for improvement after her high school days are done.
“As a sophomore, Kilee was our second-leading scorer,” Adams said. “She also led the team in steals, totaling 72 on the season. We look for her to have a breakout season this year as she has worked hard on her outside threat and ball handling this offseason. Kilee received all-conference honors last season and is sure to eclipse her overall performance this year.”
