That type of consistent talent makes it difficult for a young player to carve out a significant role and make a name for herself. But Horizon’s ability to reload every year would also indicate there are typically diamonds in the rough buried deep on the Hawks roster.
Olivia Waufle might be that latest diamond in the rough coming out of Thornton. And with the Hawks graduating eight seniors after last season, Waufle is about to be uncovered this winter.
“Olivia is just an outstanding young lady,” Hawks head coach Dan Doehler said. “She’s been on varsity for four years. The hiccup with her is that she’s had to play behind six Division-I kids the past few years. She’s always kind of been in the background. She’s an outstanding player and leader and she really guided our team this summer.”
“I think she’s Colorado’s best-kept secret.”
As a junior last season, Waufle made the most of her limited minutes. The 5-foot-8 shooting guard averaged 5.1 points, 1.5 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. She shot 37 percent from the field and coming off a strong summer with Horizon and the Rockies club program, Waufle is positioned to take her turn leading the Hawks in ’19-20.
Waufle has a 4.0 GPA and a high basketball IQ. A hustle player and an excellent teammate, Waufle was voted honorable mention in the Front Range League last season and was also a Big Idea Scholarship Winner for creating a youth basketball league for local special education kids in the Thornton area.
“She plays extremely hard on both ends of the floor and she finishes well,” Doehler said. “She was our defensive player of the year at our team banquet last year and she’s our team captain so she’s really going to show people what she can do and I think she’s going to get the credit she deserves.”
