That makes this season a pretty big one for the Highlands Ranch senior, as it will likely determine where she ends up matriculating and hooping at the next level. Depending on what type of offers Mitchell plays her way into receiving, that could mean just about any level at this point.
“I’ve been looking mostly into D-III schools since they’re typically a little higher academic,” Mitchell said. “I’ve been on a few visits but I’m still waiting to see if I can get in and I’m waiting to see how a few other teams are looking. I’m not set on D-III or anything like that, just hoping to see if anything else comes around this year.”
Mitchell is keeping her options open. The 5-foot-8 guard plays for the Highlands Ranch Falcons, a perennially contending team that went 25-2 and reached the Class 5A Final Four last season. It says something about a player for her to make one of the top rosters in the state of Colorado but because of the program’s elite quality, playing time is often scarce.
As a junior, Mitchell played in 25 of the Falcons’ 27 games and averaged 0.6 points, 1.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 steals per game. Those numbers may not jump off the page but Mitchell is still the No. 20-ranked 2020 player in the Prep Girls Hoops Colorado rankings and also played for Colorado Basketball Club’s top 17U squad during the grassroots season.
Hopefully with more minutes this winter come more options for Mitchell.
“I definitely think that being on such a good team for the last few years, I haven’t gotten huge amounts of playing time but that’s fine,” Mitchell said. “I think this year, I’ll be able to grow a lot as a player and show a little more of what I can do. But for me, it’s all about winning so I’ll do whatever my team needs from me.”
Once she finds out what schools she has been accepted to, Mitchell said she will likely be closer to making a decision in January. Mitchell is interested in studying biology.
