Both teams are loaded top to bottom and are expected to make a strong run through the post season toward their goal of reaching Columbus in mid-March.
Wayne advanced to the districts last year in Division 1 while Tri Village is a Division 4 school that made it to the regionals in Vandalia, and was part of that loaded regional with Minster, Fort Loramie and Legacy Christian. Many experts say those could have well been the top 4 D4 teams in Ohio all in the same region.
What I saw last night:
Nobody better- The impressive play of Bree Hall just continues to amaze the fans who watch her play. She was so explosive last night and nobody on Tri Village (or probably nobody on Wayne’s schedule) could compete with her. She has added a deeper range with consistency, making her virtually impossible to defend. She is the top-ranked 2021 in the latest PGH Ohio rankings and seems to just be getting better.
Twin towers- Tri Village did a great job on the boards with their two post players Maddie and Meghan Downing Meghan Downing 6'2" | C Tri Village | 2022 State OH . The sister post players controlled the paint, and Meghan stepped outside some to cause a mismatch problem. They were the two best post players on the floor most of the night.
BG bound- With one of her future coaches in attendance, senior Nyla Hampton Nyla Hampton 5'7" | CG Wayne High School | 2020 State OH was so talented, quick her quickness, strong handles, and solid perimeter range. She showed her D1 ability all through the scrimmage. Great first step, court awareness and leadership. Hampton has verballed to Bowling Green.
Young but talented- Both Tri Village freshman Rylee Sagester Rylee Sagester 5'6" | CG Tri Village | 2023 State OH and Morgan Hunt Morgan Hunt 5'10" | PF Tri Village | 2023 State OH showed a lot of solid play for their first week of high school basketball. Sagester did a nice job handling the pressure that Wayne threw on her, and buried a long 40-foot buzzer beater to win their final quarter. Hunt showed a lot of poise in the post, doing a great job rebounding and finished well in transition.
Overall assessment- I was impressed with both teams ability to play in transition. Wayne was the more athletic team, and used that to their advantage. Tri Village wasn’t afraid to push the ball and finished either at the rim with the Downings, or the solid perimeter shooting of Lissa Siler, Trissa Porter or Andi Bietry.
