Region play starts off in January and will undoubtedly bring about some of the most exciting games to look forward to as the pressure begins to rise. Based off of observations so far this season, here are the top centers at this point in time.
Maya Pete – Chandler High School
The senior contributes to the wolves in nearly all aspect of the game. Not only is she good at passing the ball and seeing the court, but she also has the sheer height and size that most girls don’t have. At 6’4, she knows how to play to her height. She’s one of the team’s top rebounders and leads the team in blocks.
Bella DiGiovanni – Seton Catholic Prep
DiGiovanni is one of the leaders for the Sentinels this season. While she isn’t frequently among the top scorers, she does her part to help contribute to the team’s success. From rebounding to assists, the junior still has another year to really sharpen up her skills and take her abilities to the next level.
Kennedy Basham – Pinnacle High School
At 6’6, Basham is possibly the tallest female high school basketball player in Arizona, but she’s still figuring out how to use her size to her advantage. Each game, she’s getting better at using her heigh when it comes to rebounding. She is one of the state’s top shot-blockers, too, and as the season has progressed, her shooting has shown improvement. As she continues to hit the weight room and keeps developing her skills, this sophomore could become one of the top players in Arizona, as she has a ton of raw talent.
Ella Schott – Cactus Shadows High School
Schott is averaging just under 7 points per game right now this season, but she also is averaging more than 7 rebounds per game, too. As only a sophomore, she has more time to continue fine-tuning her skills, but right now, she’s shooting at 48-percent from the field, so she’s not doing too shabby.
Gabriella Sanchez – Tucson High Magnet School
Sanchez is the only Freshman so far to really stand out as a center. She is already 6’1 and does a good job of recognizing her size and using it to her advantage. She’s good at boxing out and is a strong rebounder both offensively and defensively and is a great shot-blocker.
These are all players you’re going to want to keep an eye on as the second half of the season gets underway in January.
