Region play begins in January and with it comes some of the most exciting games of the season as pressure begins to mount. Based on observations so far this season, here are the top power forwards in Arizona at this point in time.
Dyamond Butler-Worley – Shadow Mountain High School
The senior went down with a severe knee injury on the 3rd day of the Nike Tournament of Champions and likely won’t see the court again this season, but her efforts and strong performance in the first half of her senior season still deserve to be recognized.
Alyssa Brown – Sahuaro High School
Brown is all of the talk right now down in southern Arizona, and when you look at her stats, it’s easy to see why. Brown is averaging just over 30 points per game and 9.6 rebounds per game, leading the team in both categories. The 6’1 junior is getting attention from a number of DI programs, and it’s likely only going to continue as the second half of the season continues.
Elizabeth Cruz – Casteel High School
Cruz is the team’s second highest scorer, averaging 11.2 points per game, and absolutely dominates when it comes to rebounding with 102 rebounds so far in 11 games. As a senior, she is a huge leader and an integral part of Casteel’s team.
Zakiirah King – Hamilton High School
Hamilton really values the team aspect, which is why there’s no clear all star on their roster of players. However, when you’re looking at the roster and watching them play on the court, a few clear things stand out. One of them is King’s ability to contribute to the team’s win. While the senior only averages 6.7 points per game, but she also averages four rebounds and one assist each game too. She has potential to help in multiple areas on the court, but is more concerned about the team over her own stats.
Samara Curry – Hamilton High School
Much like King, Curry is another player on the Hamilton roster that embraces the team mentality. She’s averaging 6.9 points per game, 4. 7 rebounds per game and is a strong defensive player with 51 steals so far this season.
Marisa Davis – Valley Vista High School
Marisa Davis is not only a difference maker for Valley Vista on the court, she’s an absolute beast. While watching her play in the opening game at the Nike Tournament of Champions against St. Mary’s of Stockton, she had 37 points in the game. Of those, 20 of them came in the 3rd quarter alone. As only a junior, Davis has a bright future ahead of her.
Alexandra Zalaya – Millennium High School
This senior is Millennium’s top scorer at this point in the season, averaging 16.2 points per game and leading rebounder averaging 7.3 per game. She’s one of the top players in the 5A division and at 6’4, she has a huge size advantage against most girls in high school. Zalaya is committed to UNC, where she will
