This game from the start was all Bulldogs, as Foley was never really able to get any momentum throughout the game and struggled with shooting in the second half. Here is my list of standouts from last night. The players on this list were so close in skill, I couldn’t even pick a Game MVP!
Alaina Hageman, Guard, Foley (2022)
Hageman was one of the few bright spots for the Falcons and accounted for almost 28% of Foley’s offense last night. When she gets open, Hageman has a nice shot and can drain the three-pointer. Hageman also has a good crossover move that she can use on defenders to get free to the basket.
Maren Westin, Guard, Becker (2023, 8th in PGH MN 2023 Class )
Westin showed last night why she is a top 10 prospect in the 2023 class. She has a deadly three-point shot and runs the floor extremely well with the ball in her hands. 12 of her 14 points came from the three-point line. On any other team, Westin would be an obvious starter but because Becker is so deep 1 thru 5 she gives them an excellent contribution off the bench.
Julia Bengston, Guard, Becker (2021, 29th in PGH MN 2021 Class)
Bengston is a driving bucket for the Bulldogs offense. She also does extremely well as a defender with picking the other team’s pocket. Her 15 points last night accumulated almost 18% of Becker’s total offense which is about as solid production as you can get out of your guard play.
Jayden Hermanson, Center, Foley (2021)
Hermanson is a player you may have heard me talk about during Breakdown Fall League in Sauk Rapids. Foley has some tall players on the team, but Hermanson played the most dominant yesterday for the Falcons with 8 points and some key rebounds.
Megan Gamble, Forward, Becker (2021, 62nd in PGH MN 2021 Class)
Notice how I haven’t mentioned one senior yet? Gamble is an excellent forward for the Bulldogs. She can crash boards, steals balls and take it to the bucket on fast breaks, she has a good outside shot and she plays extremely quick for a 5’11 forward. Gamble gets my nod for my first-half MVP for the Bulldogs in their dominant performance against Foley.
Adeline Kent, Guard, Becker (2022, 47th in PGH MN 2022 Class)
If you want my “stock riser” in the class of 2022, Adeline Kent is getting my nod. After a 23 point game against Zimmerman, she had again a great 17 point performance against Foley last night. What I like about Kent is her scoring mix. She’ll take it to the basket, drive it and set up for a mid-range jumper, and also can catch and shoot the three with ease.
Takeaways
- So far this year I have watched now 16 different teams from 4A to 1A and have not seen a deeper 1 thru 7 then I saw with the Becker Bulldogs last night. Do you know what else I love about that? All of them are freshmen through juniors, so we get to see how they progress throughout this year and beyond. Coach Dan Baird should be proud of the program he’s built with so many prospects that will play at the next level for sure.
- Although they lost by a large margin last night, the Foley Falcons are still going to compete well in their conference. They currently are tied with St. Cloud Cathedral and Albany for atop the Granite Ridge Conference in which I think there is a battle to see who wins that one at the end of the year. From I’ve seen, Foley is a deeper team than Cathedral this year who has just one key player in Charita Lewis (2022).
