A key to victory was the assignment of tough-gal Akia Tinkham to shadow Olivia Kieffer. Also, Kieffer was doubled up frequently, keeping the Comet’s gunner somewhat under control. Kieffer went 14 of 17 from the charity stripe, & totaled 25 for the game. due to the pressure. The young Comets’ could not cope inside with the defensive physicality of Alyssa Sandoval-Jimenez and Taliyah Green.
Despite sloppy passing from teammates, Makayla Grim & Nique High Hawk were noticeably sharper with hard cuts and timed motion in the second half. Tinkham finished her rim runs using finese on timely floaters and use of backboard angles. Grimm had nineteen on pure will & determination.including the game clinching FT’s with 6 seconds left. High Hawk notched 15 counters.
The young Comets rely on perimeter treys, and, even more, on freshman Kieffer slashing left or right to the rim. A capable defender reduces Kieffer’s success, eg, Tinkham. Four three’s by Abby Pierce helped, but the below 30% shooting keeps coaches awake overnight. Beating RCC might be as easy as: slow/stop Kieffer, zone up the paint, and confuse with frequent cutters.
Douglas can build upon their seniors skills, high BB IQ’s, and toughness. Hats Offs !! to the Patriot coaches who constantly praised their players, and lifted them up with encouragements. Better team chemistry will be achieved with bench excitement. The six seniors see the floor, accept the coaching, and attack weakness when exposed. Nice progress for Douglas lies just ahead on their current path.
Except, please please please, work on the free throws. You made the RCC game a difficult win by failed FT attempts. To achieve in Class AA, you need to hit 80% or better and avoid the errant passes that get you whupped.
RC Christian’s team performance indicates a program at least one/two years away from challenging in the Black Hills Conference. Stength of schedule is a major factor – too many weak ‘B’ schools on the calendar. Spectate-ing a D-1 prospect like Kieffer is entertaining and frustrating that she improves slower when facing lesser opponents.
