Jenna Jacobson launches buzzer-beater – 122119Each title year shares common themes, primarily D-1/2/3 talents, but when paired with year-round training in strength &
conditioning, winning-it-all becomes a tradition that lifts the entire campus.
Haleigh Timmer pounds the rock towards a fast break opportunity – 122119STM also brought home girls’ track trophies six times over the last seven years. Track speed bundled with overall fitness provides athletic advantages to all sports and in each contest. Having strong and fast girls in multiple sports builds cumulative advantages, raises the cultural expectations and induces higher confidence. Malcolm Gladwell writes in “The Outlier” about life success built around the tangibles of cumulative advantages.
First-quarter against WTN was not close,13-2. Turnovers by the Arrows became a cascade of errors. Ball skills are the first defense against traps and pressure. WTN had little success getting over the half-court line when the Cav’s swarmed. Half time was 32-9 on the scoreboard. Granted, a flu bug went through the WTN HS & team a week earlier, depleting stamina and ego’s alike. Getting down by 20+ does not revitalize.
Two varsity Lady Cav’s are out now, injured. Senior starter Skyler Sullivan will return in January, while 2023 Reese Ross must rehabilitate extensively from forearm bone fractures. When the injured return, that experience and foot speed encourage optimism. Sullivan placed in the 100-meter HH and relays for three years..
Three other starters have track credentials. 2020 Delaney Klosterman (15-pts) ran on three relays that placed at State. Kacie Cooper won the 400 & 800 events in 2019; she is an NSDU track commit. Altho injured, 2021 Haleigh Timmer placed second in the 400 & 800 in 2019. Cooper and Timmer accounted for 54-pts in the State ‘A’ track meet.
Timmer (25-pts/11-r) has been called versatile by Coach Brandon Kandolin (career record 330-92). No doubt. At WTN, she grabbed a defensive rebound in the fore-court, below the FT line. She dribbled to a LH lay-up, faster than the defense could get back. Speed wins.
Euro Step technique shows up on court frequently. Timmer shows an extended version, wherein she keeps the dribble going past individual defenders in a zig-zag pattern; maybe hopping as she dribbles. As the right foot touches, her dribble picks up. Moving, she then plants & pushes off the left foot towards the rim, finishing with either hand. Twice versus WTN, she hop-scotched to score. Agility wins.
It’s still a long grind to the final game, March 21st. Strength, fitness, and speed will largely determine who is left standing.
