In the game against Verrado, Zelaya had an absolutely outstanding performance both offensively and defensively, playing a huge roll in the team’s 64-29 victory.
Zelaya was up and down the court tonight making plays and getting things done. Offensively, she had 28 points in the win and a number of assists and rebounds. She’s great at using her size advantage to box out and get rebounds, especially offensively, helping the Tigers get those valuable second-chance points.
Defensively, she had a number of blocked shots on the night and made it a nightmare for Verrado in its attempt to drive to the basket. Standing at 6’4, Zelaya used her height to make things difficult for Verrado by putting her hands up and getting in the face of the shooters, but was very careful not to draw the foul. She also was able to come up with a number of steals tonight, and there were also a couple of occasions where she was able to get in and force a jump ball.
This season, Zelaya is averaging 18.6 points per game, 8.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and nearly 2 blocks. Her numbers are continuing to increase at just the right time, as they’re in the final stretch of the regular season and preparing for the playoffs. She’ll be put to the test again next week when Millennium plays Valley Vista in a huge rivalry game.
Next year, Zelaya will attend the University of North Carolina on a full ride basketball scholarship. But before she goes off to college, she’s hoping to leave more of a mark on the program by helping them win another state championship title.
