Casteel initially jumped out to an early lead, but a solid performance in the second quarter by Gilbert gave the Tigers the lead going into the half. Coming back out for the third quarter, the team made some adjustments and slowly but surely continued pulling away. Casteel did its best to battle back in the end, but it was too little too late at that point.
Gilbert was lead by senior Alayna Benavides-Johnson and sophomores Nicole Evenson and Jaleah Hendrix in tonight’s game. Benavides-Johnson had 19 points along with a handful of rebounds and assists in there as well. Offensively, she did a great job of drawing the foul and sinking shots from the foul line. Defensively, she played aggressively and was able to force a number of turnovers on the night.
Meanwhile for Casteel, junior Daeja Johnson was the clear leader for their squad tonight. The team’s entire 4th quarter was basically just Johnson, who scored ten of the team’s 12 points during the eight minute stretch.
Both teams had good ball movement tonight to set players up for open shots, but Gilbert looked to be a little more polished than Casteel did, which is part of why they won.
On Friday, Casteel will return home to host Williams Field, while Gilbert will travel to Campo Verde to continue region play.
