This game was greatly affected by the referees. There was easily 30-40 fouls called throughout the game. It didn’t seem to me that the calls were one sided though, so I’d say at least the refs were consistent. Both teams had a few key players foul out, especially late in the game.
I will say that I think Perry was most affected by this as Taty Clayburne was off the court the majority of the first half and later fouled out. She is one of their go to players so missing her really hurt her team. However, basketball is of course a team game. Madison Conner really stepped up big for Perry, scoring 28 points. She took advantage of how the refs were calling the game and lived at the free throw line all night long. Very smart play by her to use the refs to her advantage.
Outside of the free throws, Conner didn’t score a ton. I think that is mainly a testament to Amyah Reaves. She played excellent defense on Conner. I personally thought Conner would score a lot on Reaves due to the size advantage, but Reaves proved me wrong and really impressed me.
Despite Reaves exerting a ton of energy on the defensive end, she also led the Huskies in scoring. Reaves shot the ball extremely well from all areas on the court. She showed some fancy dribble moves and I was just over blown away by her performance.
Graciela Roybal also made quite the impression on me. She is definitely undersized but does not play like it. She played some great on ball defense, resulting in a ton of steals. She shot the ball well from deep when she got a look and she actually did some solid work on the boards despite her small frame.
Rebounding is all effort and it was clear which team was winning the rebounding battle in my opinion. Hamilton really committed all five players to the glass and this resulted in a lot of opportunities to score for themselves.
I felt that Hamilton did an amazing job on the defensive end, which naturally turned into offense. Their defense blitzed every screen and really put pressure on the Perry guards. Perry had a ton of turnovers, especially early in the game. Hamilton felt to be in the drivers seat the majority of the game, even when they were down early, it still felt like they were playing their game.
Hamilton eventually won the game, winning by 15 points. That’s huge! Especially against a team as talented as Perry. These two teams will see each other again and I am very excited for the rematch!
