Millennium is among the top teams in Arizona, so the explosive performance tonight was not a surprise, but their dominance makes it tough for other teams in the 5A Desert West region to hang.
Verrado came into the game sitting in second place in the region, knowing that if they could pull of an upset it would be huge. However, Millennium set the tone early, showing Verrado that this is their house.
The Tigers played ferocious defense the entire game. It didn’t matter that they were up by such a large margin early on in the game, they never took their foot off the gas. Every time Verrado got the ball back and attempted to score, Millennium hit them with steals, turnovers and blocks.
At the half, Millennium was up 39-9 over Verrado. Players like sophomore Trayanna Crisp and seniors Alexandra Zalaya and Kylie Grant. Crisp and Zalaya combined for 29 of the 39 points at the half, while Grant and Zelaya were both rebounding robots, securing the ball for Millennium a number of times.
Verrado made some adjustments at the half and were able to open up the third quarter of play with a little bit more energy under them. Not only were they able to score some buckets, but they started playing more aggressively on defense, too, trying to get the steal or force a jump ball. Sophomores Janae Byrd and Kaisha Henry both helped in their comeback effort, but it was ultimately too much of a hole for them to dig themselves out of.
It’s also worth noting that junior Kassidy Dixon had ten points on the night and was a big contributor on the court for Millennium in the win.
Next week, Verrado will look to get back on track when they host the Independence Patriots on Tuesday, while Millennium will look to keep rolling as they travel to Agua Fria.
