Here are some of the surprise teams from Class A at the midway point of the year:
Mandan
The Braves were heading into this season with a lot of question marks. They were losing two of the best players in the state and as a whole, a very good senior class. Lakyn Darras was going to be a focal point but beyond her, there wasn’t much about Mandan that people knew about. Here the Braves are, 8-3 on the year and in the mix for a top spot in the WDA. Darras has been outstanding, averaging 16 points and nearly 10 rebounds. Sydney Gustavsson has broken out too, averaging more than 13 points and nearly five boards.
Fargo Davies
The Eagles had a chance to be improved this year if only because they weren’t going to be so young compared to last year. That’s proven to be true as Fargo Davies is 8-4 and looking like a team that can win multiple games in the state tournament. Ryleigh Wacha has been terrific, averaging 16 points and seven rebounds and Taylor Fey has taken her game to another level. This group has still been a little inconsistent, but when going well, the Eagles are as good as any team in the state.
Jamestown
The Bluejays looked like a top-three team in the state in the first couple weeks of the season but have since been unable to sustain any sort of consistency. They’ve got the talent to contend in the WDA though, at this point, finishing in the top-two isn’t happening. Kameron Selvig and Grace Hegerle are excellent and Ella Falk has shown the talent to be a difference-maker but on the whole, consistency has eluded Jamestown. Don’t be surprised if this team does turn things around and make a run.
Minot
After winning just four games last year, the Magicians were going into this year hoping to make progress. Consider that mission accomplished as Minot is already at five wins on the season including excellent victories over Jamestown and Williston. Allie Nelson is turning in a potential Player-of-the-Year kind of season thus far, averaging better than 18 points and nearly seven rebounds.
