Here are some of the surprise teams from Class B at the midway point of the year:
Northern Cass
The Jaguars were alright last year, going 9-12 and losing to Enderlin in the second round of the region tournament. They’ve already eclipsed that win total, going 10-2 to start the season. The most promising facet of that success is that underclassmen are at the forefront of the effort as freshman guard Halle Crockett and sophomore forward Emma Lucas have been outstanding.
Rugby
The Panthers weren’t going to fall off after getting to the state tournament a year ago, but having to replace a huge chunk of a core like the Panthers had created challenges that few teams are equipped to overcome. Rugby is apparently one of those teams as the Panthers are a top-five team in Class B and undefeated on the season. Defense has been a calling card, as they allow less than 31 points per game. Brooke Blessum has been excellent, averaging nearly 13 points and six rebounds.
Hettinger/Scranton
The Night Hawks went to the state tournament and were returning two all-staters from a team that won 24 games last season. So far this season hasn’t been completely smooth-sailing. Hettinger/Scranton is 8-4 and sitting in sixth in Region 7. They’ve lost three games by four combined points since a season-opening 23-point loss, so they aren’t underachieving. They still have Alyssa Andress and Sam Oase and should be the team to beat in the long run.
