With teams rounding into full form and so many regions and league standings up for grabs, it’s going to be something of a war of attrition for teams late in the year. There is a lot of parity around the state at both class levels, which creates a lot of chaos and opportunity for teams to earn impressive wins on a nightly basis.
Here are last week’s top teams:
Grafton/St. Thomas
The Spoilers have somewhat quietly flown under the radar in Class B this year thanks to two early losses to top-five teams. They made a statement last week when they beat No. 3 Thompson, 51-39 though. Holding the Tommies to 39 points is impressive, but holding them to just five points in the first half is absurd. Walker Demers has really started to develop for this group lately and she was good on Tuesday, scoring 16 points.
Devils Lake
The Firebirds won three games last week, improving to 10-0 on the season and putting a stranglehold on the top spot in the EDC. They blew out Fargo South and Grand Forks Central to start and end the week, but a 91-76 win over Fargo Davies in the middle was particularly impressive. Jailyn Martinson led the way with 26 points and Abby Johnson added 22, with five total players scoring in double figures, illustrating just how deep the Firebirds are with game-breaking pieces.
Carrington
Here’s another ranked team that has flown a little bit under the radar thanks to a couple early losses to top-notch outfits. Carrington is good enough to get to the state tournament and do damage and a week like this past one is a good reminder. Carrington started the week with an impressive win over a really nice Oakes team, getting 27 points from senior guard Kiera Eli. The Cardinals picked up one of the best wins of the season Saturday, knocking Rugby from the ranks of the undefeated. Eli led the way in that one, scoring 16 points and Addison Hoernart added 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
