At the beginning of the game, Pinnacle jumped out to a quick lead, but O’Connor quickly worked to chop away at it, ending the first quarter at 18-14. Of Pinnacle’s 18 points in the first quarter, 13 of them were scored by sophomore Kennedy Basham, who had another outstanding performance for the Pioneers. O’Connor kept pushing and at one point in the middle of the second half, they were able to take the lead, but that lead was short lived. Pinnacle had a surge at the end of the game to pull away and win it.
Basham had an amazing night for the Pioneers and was one rebound shy of a double double. She had 27 points, nine rebounds, six blocks, and a couple assists on the night, really leading the team on the court tonight.
It’s important to note that the Pioneers were again playing without junior Ally Stedman right now, who is sidelined with an injury. in the wake of her absence, Basham has really stepped up as the top scorer, while sophomore Lilah Moore has done a good job as the starting point guard. Also important to mention, Shay Figueroa has also kicked things into high gear and worked to help get her teammates open for shots and had numerous rebounds tonight as well.
The key to Pinnacle’s success was ball movement. Tonight, they did a great job of passing the ball around the perimeter and setting up shots inside the paint for Basham. Everything looked fluid from the beginning, which allowed them to get out to an early lead.
Both teams play again on Friday. Pinnacle will travel to Mountain Ridge, while O’Connor will travel to Liberty.
